What's on in Canberra!

Your essential guide to what’s on in Canberra this week. Here are 6 things you shouldn’t miss!

The Commons

Dubbed Canberra’s ultimate FEASTival you can eat your way around the globe with Asian, American, European and South American food vans at The Commons. Indulge in the foods that feature on your Instagram feeds including Messina’s gelato and Mary’s burgers.  Treat yourself to your very own butler and skip the queues.

The Commons is hosting a variety of events across the full ten day celebration of summer from trivia to local wine tasting, karaoke and home brewing classes.

Held from Friday 9 December to Sunday 18 December at Regatta Place in Commonwealth Park.

Circus 1903: The Golden Age of Circus

Step back in time to the golden age of circus – where mystique and magic rule and surprise is the only guarantee.

Witness daring high wire acts, flying trapeze artists and mind-blowing contortionists in this captivating show featuring amazing acts from around the globe. Be mesmerised by the two extraordinary Elephants brought to life by award-winning puppeteers.

Of course, no circus would be complete without a charismatic ringmaster and a brassy house band. Circus 1903 has it all – turn of the century flair, sensational talent, glamorous period costumes and an eye for the spectacular!

Circus 1903 will be held from 1 Dec to 11 Dec 2016 at Canberra Theatre Centre.

Christmas Old Bus Depot Markets

The Old Bus Depot Markets are open every Saturday and Sunday before Christmas in December. Whether you’re after a handcrafted gift, or unique decorations to brighten up the home this festive season you’ll find it at these markets. Pick up a gingerbread house or perhaps some mince tarts to complement your Christmas spread. We’ve also heard you can get live Christmas trees at the markets this year.

The Christmas markets will be held every Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm until December 18.

Versailles: Treasures from the Palace

Experience the opulence, luxury and beauty of French royalty as Versailles comes to Canberra. The National Gallery will be transformed by rich tapestries, golden details and iconic garden designs. Channel your inner Marie Antoinette as you explore this stunning exhibition and make sure you take time to stop by the gallery cafe and enjoy a piece of cake.

The exhibition opens Friday 9 December and runs until Monday 17 April 2017 at the National Gallery of Australia.

Something to plan ahead for...

Christmas in the City

Christmas in the City will kick off with a concert headlined by Shannon Noll, or perhaps we should say Shannon Noel. Under a sea of fairy lights you’ll find the perfect gift at the Handcrafted Gifts and Arts Market. Grab a bite to eat at the Christmas Food Market, which will have a variety of themed nights including Sweet Treats, Burgers and Beers, Cocktails and Canapes, and Street Food.

Canberra will also be lit up by a stunning Christmas tree, which holds the Guinness World Record for most number of lights on an artificial Christmas tree.

Held in the city from Friday 16 December to Saturday 24 December 2016.

New Year's Eve in the City

Bring in 2017 to the freshest soundtrack in town as the New Year’s Eve concerts fills the city with music. Framed by the glittering cityscape sing and dance along to the Potbelleez, Heuristic, Nostalgia and the Brass Knuckle Brass Band.

Two world class fireworks display will light up the city at 9pm and midnight. Bring a picnic and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere as you celebrate the New Year with family and friends.

New Year's Eve in the city is a free concert held from 7pm to 12:30am on Saturday 31 December in Civic Square.

Bass in the Place

Bass in the Place specialises in party music that’s an edgy mix of electro mash ups, dance music and hip hop. There have been epic Bass in the Place line-ups in the past, but we think they have out done themselves this year. Odd Mob, Exposure, Tyson and BNDR will be bringing genre-defying music to the heart of Canberra this New Year's Eve.

This all-ages dance party is the perfect way to celebrate the year that was and bring in 2017. Plus, you can enjoy Canberra’s stunning fireworks display at 9pm and midnight from the best gig in the city.

Bass in the Place is a free event held from 9pm to 1am on Saturday 31 December at Garema Place.
