What's on in Canberra!

Your essential guide to what’s on in Canberra this week. Here are 5 things you shouldn’t miss!

Japanese Film Festival 2016

Don’t miss the last few days of the Japanese Film Festival. Lovingly curated by The Japan Foundation the festival shines a spotlight on the best of Japanese culture. In the lead up to the stunning Canberra Nara Candle Festival on Saturday 29 October could there be a better time to brush up on  Japanese culture?

The 2016 festival, the largest Japanese film festival in the world, will present exciting new films from Japan, including comedy, manga adaptations, samurai action, high school romance, yakuza action and much more.

The festival will be screening films at Manuka Capital Cinemas until Sunday 23 October.

Contour 556

Contour 556 is the product of what has to be the best PhD ever the University of Canberra. This festival of public art aims to explore if art can transform the public realm. 50 local, national and international artists will present everything from traditional sculpture to performance art, soundscape to textile art. Who needs Sculptures by the Sea?

Contour 556 runs over four weekends between Friday 21 October and Sunday 13 November 2016 on the Lake Burley Griffin foreshore. Starting from the National Library of Australia art is dotted around the shoreline all the way round to the Kingston Arts Precinct.

Our pick for this weekends line up is David Capra and his dog Teena, who will perform Eau de wet dogge on Saturday 22 October 2:30 – 4:00 pm at Queens Elizabeth Terrace.

Sundaze at the Museum Bar

The National Museum of Australia may not be the first place you think of to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon but in Spring it is the place to be. The museum comes alive with live music, delicious food and, of course, drinks.

Local muso and producer, GhostNoises, will be performing his signature hip-hop beats with an elaborate arrangement of loops to produce a rich tapestry of sound that is both upbeat and moving.

Free entry at the Lakeside Deck Sunday 23 October 3pm – 7pm at the National Museum of Australia.

Design Canberra

Design is weaved throughout Canberra’s history from the Griffin’s city design over a century ago to our emergence as Australia’s cool little capital today. Now in its third year, Design Canberra will present over 100 exhibitions, events activations and workshops.

Inspiration for the ludicrous number of exhibitions run during this festival is drawn from landscape design, architecture, industrial design, technology, fashion, and jewellery. There’s something for all interests and ages. Most events are free to the public

Design Canberra runs between the Thursday 27 October and Friday 25 November.

Canberra International Film Festival

With so much to celebrate at the 20th Canberra International Film Festival the programme is littered with special events. This festival is not just a series of film screenings but rather a dynamic hosting of interactive events centred around exceptional cinema and screen culture. Australian premieres, filmmaker events and industry workshops are just the beginning.

This year the program has been curated to reflect stories and voices that matter. The ranges of films present important perspectives from around the world and celebrate the diversity we live with in our communities.

Based at the National Film and Sound Archive the Canberra International Film Festival will be lighting up Canberra from Thursday 27 October to Sunday 6 November.
